Here are three different slides illustrating PCCE:

1. This first slide shows the misleading appearance of multiple layers. Cilia are extending from the top into the lumen. The lamina propria is below.



2. This slide has great contrast that brings out the individual cilia very well. You can also see the goblet cells very well. There happens to be prominent basement membrane in this section.



3. This section again shows the cilia (C). The nuclei of the cells that have cilia on their apical surfaces are indicated (CC) and the nuclei of the cells that have nuclei near the basement membrane, basal cells (BC), are also indicated.
